Project X (1968)
2/10
The matrix is being threatened.

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't get "The Matrix", and I don't get this, an obscure William Castle film that's a confusing mix of spy thriller and futuristic sci-fi, hastily thrown together in an era of mod looking weird films and sci-fi nonsense too smug for their own good. Like those films, this seems to take pleasure in the fact that it's fooling the audience to think that it is smarter than they are when really this just isn't all that good.

Certainly commanding performances (particularly by Henry Jones, Monte Markham and Harold Gould) makes this watchable, but as a film that at its release set 150 years in the future, it's a difficult one to assess. The set direction of extremely large odd looking computers and animation sequence is interesting, and it made me want a hat that looks like a mushroom, but it's a bleak look into the future and makes me hope we're all gone before it gets this messy. They do utilize the word matrix in this, so there is that for people who care.
