two stars generating limited heat
1 February 2024
It's late 19th century. Dr. Mark Lucas (Robert Mitchum) and Barbara Beaurevel (Ava Gardner) plan to marry without telling her snooty New Orleans family. Her aunt Eula is setting her up with another suitor. She is prevented from marrying Mark. After inheriting a fortune, she intends to get Mark back, but he returns from a trip married to Corinne (Janis Carter).

This feels like a romance novel brought to cinematic melodrama. One certainly hopes for more heat with these two Hollywood icons. Janis Carter is nothing to sneeze at either. Sadly, this feels a little stale and old timey. Certainly, the time period is not helping. I just don't care about these characters either way. I'm not rooting for them together or apart.
