Get a gander at what passed for a starter home in 1964
1 January 2024
Newlyweds Darrin and Samantha have found what they consider to be their dream home. Who wouldn't think it's their dream home? It's got multiple living areas, a huge kitchen, and an expansive upstairs and several bedrooms. It looks to be about 3000 square feet. I couldn't afford such a home until I was 37 and making a good salary. Here there is no talk of rising interest rates, or worrying if Darrin gets laid off, or any one of a dozen questions that are asked on sitcoms a dozen years later when somebody wants to buy a house. Because it is 1964 and most people in America in the early to mid 60s are still living in the 50s in many ways.

Darrin has not yet met Samantha's mother at this point, and there is a misunderstanding where Darrin thinks nosey neighbor Alice Kravitz is his mother-in-law, embraces her, and calls her mother. Mrs. Kravitz runs to the safety of home. Here, in the beginning, her husband at least acknowledges that she exists by feeding her medicine that is supposedly for her delusions. In later episodes he ignores her entirely and just reads his newspaper. Only in their 40s and too young to retire, I always wondered how the Kravitz's made their money.
