The Quiet Man (1952)
6/10
A decent comedy/light drama from another time

71 years after release. The Quiet Man remains an enjoyable affair. I watched on recommendation from my Mum and found it to be charming in its comedy although it was undoubtedly a little risqué in terms of some of the antiquated language and ideologies. I found the movie to be fun and some of the characters to be enjoyable. Such as the Drunk Matchmaker and the plethora of parishioners who regularly drank too much, gambled continuously and partook in casual domestic abuse. Which I have seen in some of the other reviews does not sit well with some. Although the behaviour is completely unacceptable and somewhat antiquated ,I am very much in the opinion that you judge a movie based on the acceptability of its content at the time of release. Its not fair to judge The Quiet Man by 2023 standards. The story is actually quite simple. But does enough to keep your attention. I would have given a 6.5 if it was possible as it deserves more than a 6. Another bizarre but undoubtedly enjoyable part of movies of the era is the need for a musical element and I found it more satisfying than annoying that the locals seemed to have a song for every occasion. One gripe is sometimes without subtitles its impossible to work out what some of the dialogue is. But only a minor gripe. Enjoyed. Still Enjoyable in 2023.
