Review of Fag

Fag (2019)
Beautiful, inspiring, unpretentious, a bit naive at times

This short 30-minute film wastes no time, it immediately puts us in the shoes of a young teenager confronted with the taboo, during the diabolical period that is high school. The director perfectly conveys the deep anguish of others looking upon you, the constant judgment, especially when it comes from his best friends that just want to "fit in". The search for people to talk to, when one's own family makes it clear that being different isn't welcome at home.

The repressed homo is also part of the picture: the tortured character of Esteban, a faux thug who is ultimately less courageous than Thomas.

Unpretentious acting. The scenes are perhaps a little naive at times: the teacher's speech, while hopeful, isn't the most realistic when dealing with pimply teenagers in search of an identity.

Special mention for the final scene: mesmerizing, with superb aesthetics and exquisite music by French electro musician Rone.
