Old Fashioned for Better & Not So Much
6 November 2023
I've always been kind of curious about On Moonlight Bay and decided I needed to finally check it out. Doris Day does her typical girl-next-door role here, and of course acts and sings with aplomb. As for Gordon MacRae, I've seen him in a few of his later roles but here he appears at his youngest that I've ever seen him and he seems so different here than on his later roles. He is fresh, likeable and not only a wonderful singer but a very competent actor. Together he and Day do make for a wonderful pairing. There are some nice old songs here, which I did really enjoy. The down side for me was the staging, all perfectly, blindingly overlit interior set pieces along with the mostly contrived 'old fashioned/timey' elements that were at times a bit cringe-worthy. Despite those obstacles, On Moonlight Bay can still be enjoyed as a kind of life-action fairy tale Americana film.
