9/10
Tender and complex film by director Luke Mayze
14 October 2023
I'll admit I went into the film with preconceived ideas about its story, however I came away pleasantly surprised. This beautiful little indie stars two wonderful actors, Stephen Rooke and Carlotta Morelli, and I was deeply impressed by both of their performances. Their sensitive portrayals of former lovers reunited was credible and heartbreaking, and this is largely due to the strength of Luke Mayze's writing and directing. This script could have easily leaned into hackneyed tropes and dialogue, but I was delighted to see it steering clear of all the cliches.

If you're a fan of the 'Before' trilogy then you'll definitely love FFL. Both stories chronicle two deeply flawed characters in some of the most stunning locations in the world, and both are masterful journeys through the complexity of human connection and first love.

In particular, FFL is a poignant portrayal of what happens when we fall in love with an idea rather than a person, and how desperately we cling to those ideas rather than facing the truth.
