Surprisingly pretty good
11 September 2023
I was worried this would be a little boring, as it didn't sound too exciting, and I'll have to admit... I'm not the biggest Francis Ford Coppola fan outside his main four films released in the 1970s (one of the best hot-streaks in cinema history).

But thankfully, The Rain People is pretty good. It works as a grounded and fairly downbeat road movie with a focus on character over plot, being about lonely, troubled people all trying to get by, and benefitting greatly from some very strong performances (James Caan, Shirley Knight, and Robert Duvall are all very good).

I think Francis Ford Coppola did ultimately go on to bigger and better things, but this is a pretty solid early effort from him, and is certainly worth checking out for anyone who's a fan of his.
