A beginning of the Disney renaissance era...
13 August 2023
So this is the film that apparently reignited an era of prolonged box office success for Disney and it's a perfectly charming romance epic.

This film is definitely geared towards little girls and the more romantic audiences who enjoyed Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. However Ariel is a far more engaging lead who yes is in love with a prince but she has far more spirit and agency about her. She is a hopeless romantic but she has a very adventurous spirit compared to the previous princess types before her.

All the characters are excellent and yes even the prince who unlike previous character types has a more dynamic and well rounded personality and never once seemed in danger to take advantage of Ariel when she was mute. He seemed like a decent guy if a little bland. Sebastian and Flounder really shone as did the superb Divine inspired Ursula who was an absolute scene stealer.

Of all the princess true love films Disney have had up till this point this is my favourite as all the characters just seem more well rounded and engaging for the most part.
