Typically Technicolor Universal International Pictures of the 50s , including spectacular and glimmer scenes , soap-opera style , fair damsels in distresses , brawls , glamorous costumes and anaything else . A peculiar Western set in upper Mississipi where confront gamblers , soldiers-of-fortune and crooks . Slightly interesting story and screenplay by Seton I. Miller , Western's usual writer , resulting to be entertaining enough ; however , being also mediocre , at times . Decent acting by the main starring Tyrone Power as the honorable gambler who'll fall in love for gorgeous Angelique 'Leia' Dureau/Piper Laurie , the latter will bring him happiness and tragedy alike . This was Tyrone Power's first film away from 20th Century-Fox , here he played for Universal-International Pictures with a profit share participation . They're very well accompanied by a fine support cast , such as : Julie Adams , John McIntire , Paul Cavanagh, John Baer , Ron Randell , Robert Warwick , William Reynolds , Guy Williams, Anita Ekberg's film debut , among others.

Atmospheric and thrilling musical score by the classic composer Frank Skinner . Colorful as well as evocative cinematography by Irving Glassberg , mostly shot in studios : Park Lake, Backlot, Universal Studios - 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, Corriganville, Ray Corrigan Ranch, Simi Valley, California . The motion picture lavishly produced by Ted Richmond , was uneven but professionally directed by Rudolph Maté , though it has some flaws . Rudolph was a notorious cameraman and turning as a filmmaker in 1947 directing notorious movies , such as : The Dark Past , D. O. A. , No sad songs for me , Union Station , When worlds collide , Second chance and Miracle in the rain . He shot all kinds of genres as SciFi : When the world collide ; Historical /Adventure as Seven seas to Calais, The Barbarians, 300 Spartans ; Westerns : In the Siege at Red River , The Mississipi gambler , The rawhide years , Far Horizons ; and Film Noir : Union station , Second chance . The pictures themselves were for the most part undistinguished with his best work probably being the classic Noir DOA with Edmund O'Brian . The Mississippi Gambler (1953) rating : 6/10 , acceptable and passable romance/adventure/drama movie . The movie will appeal to Tyrone Power fans .
