One or Two of a kind?
3 July 2023
"Liza, the fox fairy" is a bizarre movie that really is one of a kind. Only with respect to sub-areas a comparison with other movies is possible.

Consider the theme of the lonely girl. On this theme a comparison could be made with films such as "Repulsion" (1965, Roman Polanski) and "The match factory girl" (1990, Aki Kaurismäki). A comparison that is less than perfect because Liza (Monika Balsai) is far, far less desperate than the main character in the movies mentioned.

The phenomenon that all men die after a date with Liza offers more leads to comparable films. The fact that Liza thinks she is a mythical fox fairy resembles "Cat people" (1942, Jacques Tourneur), the role of a jealous lover on the other hand leads to "Sea of love" (1989, Harold Becker).

The difference between "Liza, the fox fairy" and all the other films mentioned is that all the other films take their plot rather seriously, while " Liza ... " is very clearly meant as a mix between fantasy and comedy.

At the beginning of this review I called "Liza, the fox fairy" a one of a kind movie. A few years later however "On body and soul" (2017, Ildiko Enyedi) was released, also by an Hungarian director. The film is no less bizarre and is also about a shy woman and a love relationship symbolised by an animal (in this instance a deer).
