The Sum Of The Pain In The Bar
17 May 2023
Hi Bones Booth!

If I'm being honest, the case is forgettable. Truly, as I just watched it earlier today and can't remember the A plot.

That said - Having seen the two previous shows David Boreanaz starred in, the moments of truly painful, honest acting are few and far in between.

(though they do exist; namely specific scenes in two of the Buffy/Angel crossover episodes.)

That's not to say he's not a decent actor; he is.

But tapping & conveying raw emotion while maintaining story integrity sometimes just doesn't get fully realized.

But this episode, Agent Booth's pain is conveyed in a truthful way, both for the character as well as cismen in general.

Crying while trying not to cry, walking that tightrope while maintaining authenticity for the script as well as his acting partner in this scene, Emily Deschanel, is tough, but the mark is most certainly hit here.

Agent Booth's pain is so apparent that for a moment, belief is suspended, and I forget that it's just a scene of a television show and instead feels like a conversation I shouldn't be privy to.

To that end, Emily Deschanel's acting deserves a nod as well (though she almost always hits the mark!).

You can almost see the wheels turning in her brain while she considers the two options Booth presents her in the bar. Although she clearly doesn't feel either option is ideal, you can see her deciding to throw logic out the window and stay with him and drink. For Brennan to do that, it shows a true commitment to her partnership and friendship with booth that while has been shown before, to see it in such an intimate and supportive way is really beautiful.

As the show goes on, there are other scenes in future episodes that are also emotionally beautiful, even when it occurs during otherwise negative situations. I'm looking forward to the rewatch!

Cheers.
