Me, Natalie (1969)
3/10
If you're watching this one to see Al Pacino....don't blink or you might just miss him!

As I noted in the summary, you only see Al Pacino for a brief moment where he plays a total jerk. As it's his first movie appearance, you have to start somewhere small...so just be prepared to only catch a glimpse of him. Instead, it's a Patty Duke feature...one that clearly showcases her tremendous acting skills.

IMDB says that the film is a comedy-drama...though I didn't see anything particularly funny in the movie. Patty Duke plays the title character. Natalie is a slightly unattractive young lady (made to look this way by giving Duke fake teeth and minimal makeup)...but she thinks she's ugly as do many folks her age. As for her family, they keep telling her how beautiful she is...which actually makes her self-consciousness worse.

Now you MIGHT think this is a film where you like and feel sorry for Natalie. Well, this really isn't the case. Natalie is a very unattractive person...inside. She's sullen, angry and spiteful...and seems to think only of herself and her 'ugliness'. As a result, she's difficult to like. This makes for a film which is the opposite of the Oscar-winning "Marty"...where the lead isn't particularly attractive outside but you really like him because he's a decent guy. As a result, this made watching "Me, Natalie" a bit difficult because it's really hard to like her or care about her....and it's hard to recommend this movie. Had they made Natalie relatable or even halfway likable, the movie would have worked a lot better. After all, who cares about the problems of a self-absorbed and nasty lady? And the script clearly makes Natalie this way. Later in the film, she's a bit less abrasive...but by then it was too late.
