Mukhbir-the story of a spy-season 1
29 November 2022
Mukhbir-the story of a spy is a drama mystery thriller web series directed by jayprad desai and shivam nair.

The first scene of this show sets the tone. A brilliantly staged scene where the heartbeat just beats faster and faster. On the contrary, the screenplay of this show engages you with its nuance and style. Working under the shadow of a mainstream stalwart like neeraj pandey, the two directors are able to maintain a tight grip on the storyline and also fill it with a crisp philosphy and nuanced take on patriotism.

Zain khan durrani with his infectious smile and folds under his eyes does a brilliant job as mukhbir. He got the best character, someone who was shaken by the inner turmoil by the acute spyness that he had to carry on despite falling head over heels for the people he genuinely cared for. In the seventh episode, there is a scene between him and alamgir, where he just cries and sobs after a heinous crime he committed. Just shows the character arc that he portrayed. Prakash raj and harsh chhaya are dependable as always. Zoya afroz is someone i look forward to but honestly she didn't have much to do. Needless to say, she was slaying with her beauty. Other actors did full justice to their roles. There wasn't any bad performance here.

A show around the 1965 backdrop and there wouldn't be use of heavy ghazal music is like denying VIRAT a chance to play a gorgeous cover drive. The music is calming and melodious. The background score has a retro feel, like it had with one of the finest 'monica o my darling'. Various pop references about dev anand have been sprinkled here and there.

The production quality is a sight to behold. The era has been created wonderfully. The vintage cars, ink pens, morse code machines of the 60s, vinyl records, the details have been well recorded. The use of green screen is visible quite often but it fades out to the great quality of the series. The cinematography uses reflection shots to great use. The colour use was a thing i liked pretty much.

A spy on that side of the border saves a thousands of soldiers on this side. Wars have a devastating quality to it. Sometimes, if you can prevent it, you should do it immediately. Spies undergo a lot of turmoil. No spy is trained to kill innocents. They are not terrorists. They feel the lives around them. Towards the end, the series explains it without being oreachy at all.

"Mukaddar ka mukhbir hu janaab, dehshat pukarkar, nacheez na kijiye."
