An American author Helen Keller once said, "Better to be blind and see with your heart than to have two good eyes and see nothing" (Helen Keller Quote, n.d.). It became true for the main characters of a short Korean romance movie called "Two Lights: Relumino," released in 2017 and directed by Jin-ho Heo, also known for producing Season of Good Rain (2009). Surprisingly, this film is an advertisement for a new technology developed by Samsung company for the visually impaired; however, I would have never guessed it if not for the reviews of other watchers, as it is so obscure that it is impossible to notice it.
Seo Insoo is the main character of this story who is 27 years old and suffers from visual impairment. In the first scene, he encounters Ahn Sooyoung, a young beautiful girl who is also almost completely blind. They both attend photography club, where they start to develop feelings towards each other but face some difficulties and confusion.
It has been only three years since Seo Insoo lost his vision, and it is difficult for him to adapt to this new blurry world. Unlike him, Ahn Sooyoung became blind when she was seven, and she has already adjusted to this new life. This difference causes several misunderstandings that they will have to overcome on their own.
I came to this movie because of its cast, more specifically Park Hyung-Sik, who played Seo Insoo in "Two Lights". I was always surprised by his astonishing acting skills and visuals, and this movie was no exception. Moreover, Han Jim-In, who acted as Ahn Sooyoung, managed to create the needed atmosphere to convey the message the director wanted to present.
In addition to providing entertainment, this short film helped me overcome my personal fears. Since childhood, I have been obsessed with my eyesight and the possibility of losing it; nevertheless, after watching "Two Lights: Relumino" I realized that As Long as You Are Alive... nothing, even blindness, can stop you from being happy.
