Based on H. P. Lovecraft's short story Dagon (1919) and his novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1931), this delightfully creepy flick is about two couples on a boat that gets stuck on rocks just offshore of a town called Imboca. By the time they get to land we see there is something wrong, something desperately wrong, with the locals. They look creepy and sort of like sloppily made creatures; they look as if they are part human and part not. When they go to the church to find out stuff we see this is not a christian church, nor a christian town. Something has changed these people, and they are hellbent on changing our heroes.
