The Last Slumber Party (1988 Video)
5/10
A generally decent slasher that's got a few extreme limitations
21 August 2022
Heading off to Spring Vacation, a teen and her friends prepare for the special slumber party they've been waiting all year for, only to discover that the event has been crashed by a psychotic killer killing everyone one by one, and must try to stay alive to stop him.

This one was a decent enough slasher effort. That this one provides the strong starting point here for the rampage featuring the dueling storylines involving the hospital staff preparing for the patients' surgery while the girls are getting ready for the boyfriends to arrive. With the killer loose from this point and shown to be stalking the party unaware of everything, this comes off quite fun as the guys' showing up one at a time allows them to be knocked off which the girls can misinterpret as leaving early while not suspecting anything. As a setup for these first half ambush-style stalking scenes and confrontations, this all sets a mood and a low-budget charm that gives this a likable enough energy. However, beyond this setup, the film is entirely undone by one of the lamest and least intimidating killers in the genre. Dressed in hospital scrubs with a paltry surgical mask and the constant use of a scalpel as his weapon of choice, there's very little fear to be generated here as the unimposing stature requires him to sneak up and ambush victims who stand around and do nothing. The pathetic choice of weaponry means that everything is generally relegated to slit throats that grow old after a while, and although the gore effects aren't terrible the repetition is a factor here. Combined with a lackluster story explaining how he chose them as targets as well as the obvious source limitations on display, these are the film's drawbacks.

Rated R: Extreme Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, and Brief Nudity.
