I Found The Whole Less Than The Sum Of Its Parts
28 July 2022
Wyatt Cenac and Tracey Heggins meet and have a brief affair in a beautifully photographed and color-desaturated San Francisco.

Barry Jenkins' first movie shows San Francisco in flux, with the Black population being squeezed out as the city. But as the film progresses and the story becomes more about what is called identity politics these days -- Cenac identifies himself as a Black man, and when he asks Miss Heggins how she sees herself, she responds "That's ridiculous."

The result is an anecdote about two people who connect briefly and then move on. Have no no complaints about any individual aspect of this movie, but I find its technical flourishes -- desaturating the color -- and overt political arguments seem to overwhelm the sketch of the plot.
