Minamata (2020)
Minamata is a terrible and very amateur mess of a "movie". NOT worthy of the caliber of actors involved. NOT GOOD. Don't Believe The Hype! PASS.

Given the potential of the talent and raw subject involved, Minamata is likely one of the most amateurish misfires of a movie ever made. Onscreen, it appears like one giant mistake, scene after unrelated scene. No cohesion. This viewer was never engaged or ever cared, throughout.

The makers had it all potentially: the actors, a decent budget, an intriguing and important subject, yet they came up short with nothing but an unworthy, boring and pointless, scattered POS. Disappointing at best. Unfortunately that's the truth! Let's not pretend here. Hopefully some others will also have the guts to say it out loud as well. Peer group pressure is powerful in this brave new world.

Yes, we all can empathize completely that Depp has been through the wringer in his personal life as of late and we all applaud his steadfast tenacity to tell the truth and win in court as he did. BUT, that reality show doesn't help this movie. Inspired by Depp's admirable quest for truth elsewhere, let's tell the truth here about this piece of weak garbage.

Minamata may have been an honest effort of passion by all who were involved to tell the story of a much overlooked historical human tragedy, but a professionally made film in the long tradition of great storytelling, Minamata IS NOT. Not at all. A high school level at best was achieved by these wanna-be film makers. Sad.

The director, producers, and writers surely gave the story an honest go, unfortunately they all fantastically failed. That's a simple fact. They just did not have the goods to pull it off in reality. Don't believe the hype or give the crew a sympathy pass considering the media frenzy around Depp at the moment. That would be lazy and irrelevant, and would not be true to the great art of filmmaking or to the struggles and hard won successes of so many other filmmakers in the past. Save yourself the time and money and give this lukewarm poop a solid pass. Rated 2/10 here, and that is only for the different actor's all too obvious efforts to express something meaningful, around and despite a clearly awful script and non-director at the helm, nothing more. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

In the end, Minamata is deeply sad, but for all the wrong reasons. This important story has yet to be told properly. Shame.
