Review of The Wisher

The Wisher (2002)
3/10
"I read all about it on the 'net!"
3 June 2022
Watched this film recently because, well, I have no taste. Semi-interesting premise with a girl into horror movies who gets stalked by a supernatural killer from a movie called The Wisher. The specific lore here is the killer is a wood nymph that grants your wishes (WISHMASTERploitation?). It was just so-so. The big takeaway for me though is I don't think I've seen any era age worse than the late 1990s/early 2000s. The songs laid on the soundtracks are terrible, always sounding like either 311, Blink182 or No Doubt. The fashions are quite noticeable. And everything is shot with all the style of a Friends episode. But worst of all is filmmakers desire to work the internet into literally everything. Now in this film it is a (hilarious) plot point where the lead girl tries to download the film to find out how to kill The Wisher (the 200mb file keeps buffering...the horror, the horror!). But there are so many shoehorned in lines: "I read all about it on the net." "It is a rage all over the web!" "We need to get to an internet cafe!" It sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm glad '80s movies (even the worst ones) never hammered audiences with "I need to get home to play my Atari", "I have to get home to watch my MTV" or "Sheriff, it's called a Walkman" (a horrible sin from Super 8). Just a weird observation that I had to rant about on the net. *blasts 311's "Down" while slipping on my JNCO jeans*
