Friday (1995)

3/4

'Friday' is not a subtle movie, and is not an artistic expressionist piece. It is a light-weight, very funny stoner comedy. It's one of the better stoner comedies I have seen. What 'Friday' also has is a heart, which alot of these movies don't. It does have a lot of foul language and drug use, but it's done with heart and meaning, if that sounds right.

The movie follows an unemployed Craig (Ice Cube) and weed smoker Smokey (Chris Tucker), who are forced to come up with $200 dollars to a local bully or else consequences will ensue.

Good plot, good acting from Ice Cube and Chris Tucker (who is very funny), and good direction from the talented F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job from 2003) makes this a gem. It's not a great movie, but an entertaining experience. It doesn't quite have enough plot to sustain a full length feature, but the dialogue and Chris Tucker keep it going at a reasonable pace. In other words, don't expect the work of Fritz Lang, and you will have a great time with 'Friday' as I did.
