Tiny Tim: King For EVERY Day

Warning: Spoilers
I gave this superb documentary, TINY TIM: KING FOR A DAY, 10 out of 10 stars not as a knee-jerk reaction; I wanted to wait a day to see if my initial positive attitude remained, after having some time to think about it.

After some thought, I am even more certain that 10/10 is indeed my rating.

TINY TIM: KING FOR A DAY is a tender chronicle of a man whose actions will make the viewer cry with laughter one minute, then turn those tears to ones of sadness.

Tiny Tim's story is one of a conflicted, never-give-up performer who could be both sweet and more than a tad nasty (whether intentional or not) within the same conversation; he spoke his mind. He loved his god, but he loved women more.

Inspired by Justin Martell's.brilliant book, ETERNAL TROUBADOUR - THE IMPROBABLE LIFE OF TINY TIM (Martell is a co-producer of the movie), this film is more a study of Tim the Man rather than Tim the Performer. And that's the point. Without his inner strength, his incredible drive, we would never have even heard Tiny's "Tiptoe Thru the Tulips" or "Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight" (certainly his two best-known songs); for to get to that point of recording those songs, Tim had to sustain dreadful negativity from not only his own parents, but from those who spat upon him and threw things at him during his earlier street-performer days.

We hear from his wives (yes, he had other wives besides Miss Vicki), and even from Tulip, his daughter with Miss Vicki.

"Weird Al" Yankovic's narration is perfect. He reads passages from Tiny's diary that show the true makeup of the man.

Wavy Gravy, in an interview, says it best: "People either got it or they didn't." More people will "get it" than they did before, after the film's 75 minutes.

Certainly you'll see and hear many of Tiny Tim's performances (his "Man on the Moon" was the one that filled me up), but you'll marvel at how, long past his prime, this man continued striving for that "one more hit record." He never did get that one more hit record, but this documentary will show all who watch that Tiny's sustained struggle to get there is what made him a king for EVERY day. ~ Steve Ludwig.
