An Entertaining Pre-Code Adventure Film
5 April 2021
This film begins with an American ship arriving at a tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific and being happily greeted by the natives who rush out to meet them in their canoes. Later that night there is a feast held in their honor where the natives sing and dance in celebration. Things take an immediate turn for the worse, however, that one of the sailors by the name of "Johnny Baker" (Joel McCrea) tries to become acquainted with one of the women named "Luanna" (Dolores del Rio) who just happens to be the daughter of the chief and is therefore considered off-limits to anyone except a native prince. In any event, the situation is resolved and things soon return to normal. Unfortunately, both Johnny and Luanna fall in love and this creates all kinds of problems from that point on. Now rather than reveal anymore I will just say that this was an interesting film due in large part to the incredible special effects and the mature content allowed for this film as it was produced prior to the restrictive Hayes Code being enforced in 1934. Admittedly, it's quite dated and some modern viewers may not fully appreciate it. Even so, I found it to be entertaining for the most part and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly above average.
