Kenneth Williams: Fantabulosa!
3 January 2021
Everyone liked Kenneth Williams thanks to the Carry On movies but very few would had held on to that opinion if they really knew the man.

Fellow actors thought he was difficult to work with. Williams was obsessed with cleanliness. He was a pseudo intellectual uber snob full of self loathing for his homosexuality.

Williams was not a strong actor but he found his niche in comedy. His ability to tell charming anecdotes made his a regular on chat shows. Williams love of words and wordplay would go a long way on radio. Hence the title Fantabulosa.

Just around the time of the 1987 General Election. Williams was on television stating why he supported the Conservative Party. It was because they were intellectuals. If he was alive in 2021, he would still be saying the same thing. Can you even the picture the present lot of Tories as intellectuals? More a bunch of pathological liars ands chancers. Here is some news for you, they were the same back then.

Michael Sheen revels in Williams mannerisms. The film is based on Williams' diaries that sheds a light on a lonely, complicated man. He would had loved to be known for legitimate theatre rather than the Carry Ons. He disliked his father, adored his mother but was also cruel to her.

Williams used to envy and at the same time be reviled by Charles Hawtrey's ability to pick up men for casual sex. To Williams having sex was dirty. It was part of his cleanliness obsession.

Apart from Sheen's performance, I thought the movie was dour and morose as Williams private thoughts. I have seen documentaries on Williams that gave a better insight on him.
