Endeavour: Home (2013)
Season 1, Episode 4
1/10
An incredibly convoluted, deus-ex-machina, poorly-written episode

My overall rating of "Endeavour"'s Season 1: 6/10

This episode is a bit of a mess to say the least. First of all, the attention to detail is non-existent: Morse is apparently considered good at the shooting range when we clearly see him firing two shots at a time, the second coming while the gun is thrown way up by the recoil (unless we're supposed to take it he's so good of a shot he flaunts it by getting a recoil-aimed-shot into the "head" of a human-shaped target after getting a normal initial shot into the centre of mass? I'd think it's a vast stretch); plastic windows are clearly seen at the "street at the club's entrance" location etc etc. Secondly, the plot is convoluted as all hell, as we're dealing with two actually-not-connected cases strewn with false leads and red herrings that just never add up. Thirdly, it's resolved in a frankly ridiculous manner with the cavalry headed by Bright arriving (without particular reason and against Bright's earlier stance); and the second case is resolved with Thursday shooting a criminal with his - what is understood to be - illegally-posessed gun and nobody seems to ask any questions - and all of that just for a bit of fanservice for the fans of "Inspector Morse"??? Fourthly, the family/past sideplots are a distraction and nuisance for both Thursday and, much much more, for Morse. Fifth, what's up with Joan walking barefoot in the winter??? And eating a sandwich outside, in the winter??? I get that winters are mild in England, but unless she's supposed to be a winter-swimmer kind of gal that's just nonsense.

The music is pretty awesome, though - not quite the opera bits I've been getting used to in the series, but certainly something that adds more to the feel of the era.
