El Mariachi (1992)

Terrific debut!

This is where it all began for Robert Rodriguez.

Amazing what he managed to make with such a paltry budget ($7250 production budget).

The story is simple, a case of mistaken identity as an out of work Mariachi is hunted down as a killer. This movie is gritty, and to me, it feels like a modern day Mexican take on a spaghetti western!

The biggest let down of the movie is the cast. The majority of them are a amateurs, and it shows. They seem like friends and family of Rodriguez who are helping out to keep the costs down. Out of the main characters, though, Moco is the only one truly let down by the actor. He has a very limited range of emotions and just doesn't really do much with the character.
