Unstoppable (2020)

Sor Juana, Thelma and Louise, Y tu mamá también

Warning: Spoilers
This is an incredibly ambitious series, that tackles a number of nuanced cultural issues, although not much is nuanced about the story line: race, class and gender in Mexico. I loved that this story develops four protagonists that are all struggling with making authentic choices. Sor Juana would be proud of how these women deal with the patriarchy and all the hombres necios (and a couple of not-so-necios) in their lives. Luckily these friends find a different option than Thelma and Louise driving into the abyss, and there are super-transparent references to the charolastras of Y tu mamá, but with a specific female bent. I am left wondering what Marcela and Mike will do to survive after the final episode, as they escape from their sadistic caretaker. Sadly there don't appear to be many viable options. As one character says, they're not "dogs in need of rescue." More of this, please! These are stories worthy of being told!
