Watch Room (2019)
4/10
No new ideas, so-so execution

Warning: Spoilers
"Watch Room" is an American English-language live action short film from 2019, so really new in fact and these slightly over 15 minutes were written and directed by Noah Wagner and Michael Koehler. These two are not too famous or prolific, but their cast of approximately five people here includes names that you may have come across on other projects in fact, be it some of the best television has to offer or also some movie blockbusters, even if they never played big characters. But still I am surprised they are on board here because they are probably better and mor experienced actors than I would expect for this one. Sadly, not even the best actor can make a mediocre (at best) script work. It is about science fiction and artificial intelligence, which sort of explains the almost 200k views this scored in a few months (not a great figure, not a bad one), but the concept on how said AI turns the tables on its makers by saying she is the one in charge was not executed in a way I liked and that convinced me. I did like the back and forth between the two realities and it was also nice that we got a solution (somewhat) at the end, so the film did not take itself more seriously thant it had a right to, or at least not much more, but I still felt it tried to be a lot smarter than it actually ended up eventually. Allso the key plot I mentioned earlier has been done many times before admittedly and nothing here really reeks new and creative in a way that it breathes new life into this one. It's not a failure, technicallyl it is okay. The very quiet and subtle soundtrack works well and I also thought atmospherically, it was an okay watch overall. At best. But nothing more than okay and that just won't make the cut anymore these days. All in all a thumbs-down from me. Not recommended.
