Buckle up for some fun with the two Coreys.
31 March 2019
License To Drive sees the two Coreys, Haim and Feldman, at the height of their star power, when teenage girls would pay to see almost anything starring the up and coming duo. Clearly designed to cash in on the Coreys' appeal, this is mindless teen caper nonsense that reeks of the '80s, but it can still be quite a lot of fun, with lots of madcap vehicle-based mayhem as Les Anderson (Haim) borrows his grandpa's Cadillac to go on a date with Mercedes Lane (Heather Graham), the girl of his dreams, despite failing his driving test. Feldman plays second fiddle to heart-throb Haim as Dean, Les's pal, who comes along for the ride, accompanied by nerdy friend Charles (Michael Manasseri).

The action moves along at a reasonable lick, the most amusing bits being Les's driving test with a scary coffee-loving instructor (James Avery) and the Cadillac being taken for a spin by a drunk (Henry Alan Miller), but for me the highlight of the film is Heather Graham: it's no wonder that Les risks so much in order to take her on a date - she looks absolutely stunning and it's a real shame that the latter part of the film sees her unconscious and confined to the trunk of the car. I could definitely have handled more of the girl! The very silly finale sees Les having to drive his pregnant mother (Carol Kane) to hospital with the car in reverse, thereby redeeming himself in the eyes of his father (Richard Masur).

6.5/10, rounded up to 7 for IMDb. While it's certainly no The Lost Boys, this vehicle for the two Corey's is still worth taking for a spin.
