Rorschach (2015)
4/10
Watchable, but really nothing special
27 January 2019
This film is an obvious attempt to follow in the documentary-style, 'reality' feel, success footsteps of (particularly the first) "Paranormal Activity" (2007) and, to a degree, "The Blair Witch Project" (1999)... the former of which I found the most scary, and the latter not especially. There is also a distinct resemblance to the far superior 1982 movie "The Entity" which, although not in the same documentary/reality style, is a far superior scary experience.

This - somewhat new - technique does work and does give a sense of authenticity and real scariness. However... it has to be done right and, although I suppose this attempt is okay, if the concept is used too often and as a matter of course then the effect may be lost to commonality... and can lead to a description of 'corny' through over-familiarity with what the director is trying to achieve.

Thus, with "Rorschach" employing this 'creative' filmmaking technique and copying the same old haunted-house storyline as has been done so many times before, a sense of mediocrity is what endows it as watchable, but really nothing special.

So, after much mulling over whether to award a 4 or a 5/10 rating, as I do like scary, hauntings movies and I didn't find it unwatchable (although very slow-paced) I was generous and gave the benefit of the doubt with a 5/10. However, after much retrospect, I'm afraid I really did have to downgrade my rating to a 4/10.

...and I STILL don't know what "Rorschach" is, or what it means!
