Karwaan (2018)
7/10
Journey of seeds destined to bud into flowers
18 November 2018
Avinash (Dulquer Salmaan) takes help of his friend Shaukat (Irrfan Khan) to deliver (and exchange) a dead body of a grand mother with his father's - from Bangalore to Coimbatore. Along the way they pick up the lady's grand-daughter Tanya (Mithila Palkar) from Ooty.

The story is about their road - journey - of these three different personalities. Avinash is a depressed young man who wants to be a photographer and is stuck in a regular IT job doing stuff he is least interested in. Shaukat is a middle-age man from conservative background with street-smart playfulness and Tanya is a young girl - who is of the X-Gen "cool" type.

The supporting cast includes - Amala playing the mother of Mithila, Donna Munshi as Irrfan's love interest, Aakash Khurana as Salmaan's father, Beena as Amala's mother and Kirti Kharbanda as Salmaan's ex-college friend.

This is Director Akarsh Khurana's (screen-writer of Krishh 3 and Kites) debut movie and he was done a good job. The music is given by multiple artists -but the one that stands out is by Pradeep Kuhad's theme song. Kadam

The movie is a light hearted comedy romantic drama. The story moves with even pace, except a few slack scenes between Salmaan and Mithila in second half.

This is Dulquer Salmaan's (son of Malayalam Superstar Mamoothy) acting debut in Hindi and he is such a natural actor and has done brilliant job. Mithila Palkar as a young girl does justice to her role.

But it is Irrfan Khan who with his brilliant performance lights up the screen and brings a smile to our face with his mere presence. He has that ability to convert a normal scene to extraordinary and a normal dialogue to a quote to remember that penetrates deep into our heart.

A special mention of Hussain Dalal for penning such beautiful lines for Irrfan's character.

A couple of them : "People know how to play the human rights game, but do not know humanity"

"Let world crush me and bury me - but it is destined that as a seed I'll will bud and flower in LOVE"

The movie was conceived in 2013, and was initially written by Bejoy Nambiar - but due to differences between him and Director -the movie was shelved off -and only after Producer Ronnie Screwvala revived the project it was re-started again in 2017 with a new cast.

The initial cast was Abhishek Bachchan for Salmaan's role and Arvind Swamy as Irrfan's role. Seeing the current performances -I think the earlier casting would have had been a total mis-fit.

It is a nice feel good movie with lots of light moments that would bring a smile and feel-good feeling.

The movie made with a small budget of INR 20 crores has done average business and is not loss making venture.

I would go with 6.75 out of 10 for this movie
