Dadamoni tugs your heartstrings in this one

Warning: Spoilers
The title says it all. I remember my parents watching an Ashok Kumar movie with great emotion when I was a kid. I only remembered the song Rail Gaadi. Out of curiosity tried watching this movie today and realized why they valued this movie so much. It's one of the Crown Jewels during the golden era of Indian Cinema. Dadamoni portrays the role of the sacrificing highly principled patriarch with great ease. Veena Choudhury as the vile zamindarni successfully makes you cringe. Ashok Kumar inherits property from his father-in-law. But unlike his wife he is more into looking after the poor and needy and gets along better with them. When he is cheated into signing papers to burn their village, he becomes disgusted and goes to the city. He comes back to rescue the daughter of one of the villagers from the clutches of an evil accountant and ends up killing him while defending the girls honor. He refuses to shy away from the crime admitting his guilt in court. He is sentenced to prison and agrees not to be in touch with his own daughter lest she gets a shock. He comes out of prison an old man with a broken heart only to goto his daughters wedding to bless her "Aashirwad". The last scene where he looks at his daughter while taking his last breath is pure cinematic bliss. There was and there will be only one "Dadamoni"
