The horror of slavery
8 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say the movie would have been much better if one would cut out all the horror parts and make it a drama. It could have been metaphorical revenge without ghosts. The movie was much better in the beginning before the horror started entering it. The acting was great, good setting and story. Slavery was a horror in itself and it was well portrayed.

The ending though was weak. The ghost part was a bit like in the old horror movies and lacked real strength. I am not too sure why the master ended up the one surviving while his son and son't wife were killed by them. It seems like they missed the target for their revenge. But I guess they just wanted to show that he will have to live with the consequences. At the same time though was it really a punishment for him? He couldn't wait for his wife to die and didn't care about his son anyways. So how was this proper punishment? Just that the heir ended up being black?

One thing I absolutely didn't get was the importance of Manuel. He is referred through the movie and seems to be the only one the master cared about. But he died before the main actions happened. I assume it is his oldest son. But why did he matter? How did he die? If he didn't matter why was he even part of this movie? Too many questions.
