Not a great movie but a really decent one

I'm a huge fan of H.P Lovecraft and for years I've wanted to see this movie. I finally did that. Despite the title, it isn't based off "Dagon" but rather "Shadow Over Innsmouth". And it actually does it pretty good. Of course, they modernized the story a bit, throwed in a couple elements, the story's location is now in Spain, which didn't bother me. Actually, I was fairly surprised how well it translated into the story. Spanish can sound really terrifying and city of Imboca (Innsmouth) seems even more alien and isolated when you don't understand what citizens say. Overall, even with all the changes, it was a fine adventure and all the checkboxes from Lovecraftian lists are there. Especially the atmosphere. From the things I didn't like... Well, CGI. The scene from a dream, where Uxai screams and awful CGI tentacles come out of her mouth... Really? Why do this? I also didn't like the fact that they have shown Dagon. CGI was far better in that instance but you guys read Lovecraft... His motto is "fear the unknown". You don't show ANY of the Elder Gods, they are supposed to be vague and scary. Main character is also sometimes too annoying and throwing one-liners much to easily. I don't think it works because film takes itself much too seriously to play the campy card. Other than that, it's a good movie, especially taking its budget into consideration. Good soundtrack, good sound fx, nice practical effects. Mainly for fans of Lovecraft but I think anyone who enjoys B horror movies will be pretty content with this.
