Kisses for sale, then marriage and pregnancy mix-up
22 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Based on the Broadway hit of the same name, which was based on a series of short stories, all these written by Hugh Herbert.

We begin at a USO bazaar, where 15y.o. Shirley Temple(actually 17)and her friend 17y.o. Mildred are selling guest towels, of all things. They haven't had any sales, when Shirley's very tall boyfriend, Dexter, comes by and she arm-twists him into buying 5 towels. She kisses him for his donation and he goes off. Some of the nearby G.I.s get the idea that they are selling kisses, in addition to towels. One grabs Mildred and kisses her. She's mad, but Shirley talks her into selling kisses. Soon, there is a long line in from of their stand. Things go OK until their mothers happen by, and are shocked by what they are doing. On the way home, everybody argues about who was responsible and whose daughter is a bad influence on the other. This sets the stage for the rest of the movie.

Raymond, Mildred's younger brother, offers sarcastic takes on the various proceedings, throughout the film. Shirley now and then says the wrong word. For example, "hypocritical oath" for Hippocratic oath, "fragrant" for flagrant, "imperable" for imperative, and "physiology" for psychology. Shirley's oversized next door boyfriend, Dexter, seems slow-witted and awkward, hitting his head on various things. The fathers of both Shirley and Mildred get even more excited about the kissing fiasco than their wives, and eventually have a fist fight(which we don't witness). This makes things complicated, because Mildred and Shirley's older brother Lenny are engaged in a serious romance. In fact, they quickly decide to marry without telling anyone except Shirley, since Lennie has to return to his airbase in a day or two.

Shirley is sworn to secrecy about the marriage. Several months later, she accompanies Mildred to the gynecologist, and, unfortunately,is seen by a notorious busybody leaving without Mildred, hence giving the impression that she is pregnant, rather than Mildred. This news leaks to Mildred's mother to Shirley's mother. Shirley is cornered into admitting that she is pregnant, with Dexter the father. The parents go through the roof at this news. Later , she claims she is married to Dexter(without proof), which diffuses much of the hostility.

Well, you can imagine that eventually the charade must end, as the Hatfield/McCoy feud ends, and everyone is forgiven. I must say Shirley was gorgeous at age 17, and not a bad actress. All the actors were good.
