Halloween is a great episode where Ethan Rayne turns the citizens of Sunnydale into their costumes. Giles reveals he once knew him from his ripper days when he was involved in black magic. It was interesting to see Sunnydale in echoes more then usual as creatures roam the street, destroying property and terrorizing the citizens. Buffy becoming an 16th century high class girl isn't around to stop the carnage giving us a glance at what life may be like if she never became the slayer and remained the vain girl she once was. Also up to this point we never saw Giles as more then an uptight librarian yet we're reminded he was young once and he has a darker side to his personality then we realized which may account for him being laxed with his charge unlike other watchers.
Also the episode is full of tension as Spike takes advance of the situation to hunt down Buffy to kill her while Giles hints for the power source involved in creating this Halloween havoc. Which will be the first to succeed is a count down to the last minute as Spike leans in to bite her as Giles smashes the statue.
