Remade as THE WORKING MAN by Arliss as a talkie
10 July 2016
Arliss was if anything meticulous. FIVE of his SIX silent films were remade as talkies with he at the helm.

DISRAIELI (same title); THE GREEN GODDESS (same title); THE RULING PASSION (as THE MILLIONAIRE); THE MAN WHO PLAYED GOD (same title); $20 A WEEK (as THE WORKING MAN).

The only silent not remade was THE DEVIL, which Arliss considered, but thought too out of date to attempt.

According to Arliss' second set of memoirs, the initial part of this silent film, was discarded for a new approach, discarding the precipitous adoption of a child as irresponsible, and a new prologue was created, which was much more believable and natural.

THE WORKING MAN stands as one of his best films with his "find", Bette Davis, far more natural than in her first pairing (THE MAN WHO PLAYED GOD).

LOC holds a print of the original $20 A WEEK. Some DVD mogul might contract to release both the original and its talkie remake on a double disc.
