6/10
great sense of place
26 November 2015
It's 1910 in the Brazilian badlands. The Breves run a decaying dusty family sugarcane plantation. Its best days are long gone since the lost of the slave labor. There is an on-going blood feud with the neighboring Ferreiras. Tonho (Rodrigo Santoro) is ordered by his father to avenge his older brother but he is hesitant to follow in the family tragedy. He falls for fireswallower Clara from the traveling circus.

I love the dusty dirty sunburned style of the movie. The story is pretty simplistic Greek tragedy. I would like for the movie to develop the Breves family a lot more. They are a pretty close off bunch and it's hard to feel for them. I like the setting a lot more than the characters or their stark melodrama.
