Mad Sponge: Beyond The Shining Time Traveling Avengers should have been the title.

Warning: Spoilers
Burger Beard is a pirate who owns a pirate ship food truck who finds a storybook about Bikini Bottom on the island the show opens on. When he alters the story, making the formula for the Krabby Patty disappear, the world under the sea becomes a Mad Max like environment where everyone goes crazy and Spongebob and Plankton go back in time to get the formula back from disappearing. But when that backfires, the rest of the gang including Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and Mr. Krabs go up to the surface to find the formula and bring it back as superheros.

That sounds really stupid. But since it's a Spongebob movie, It's what I expected.

One of the biggest things I liked about this movie is that it is almost fully animated. The only time CGI is shown is in the third act. But It could have been better if they had more time on Spongebob and his friends exploring our world. It's rare that you see a mainstream 2D movie these days, but it is nice to see a movie that has this style of animation again.

The parodies are possibly the bigger problems of the movie. They parody Mad Max, which is the setting for a famine depression Bikini Bottom for some of the movie, The Shining, which is unnecessary and the Avengers which they barely have time to develop their superhero personas. Not only will kids not get these parodies, but they stick out like a extremely sore thumb to the audience who have seen these films before.

At above an hour and a half it is almost forgettable, but the voice acting, execution and jokes (most of them) are good and end up for a somewhat entertaining film. Kids will like this but adults will be mixed.
