Another episode with a lot of diverse cases. Moments that make one laugh and dramatic ones, or both. And great character development.

One of the biggest stories of the episode is the case when a high school kid can't be saved and dies. Dr. Carter has to find his parents. At first they end up telling about the death to the wrong parents, then he has to deliver the horrible message himself. I think John Carter is a great part of the show. I like all characters, but one of his functions is that he kind of represents the audience. Not by being passive and not knowing medicine of course, but because this world is very new to him just as it is to us. What the other doctors are used to is still as shocking to him as it would be to the viewers. Seeing him having for the first time announce death to somebody's parents makes it very easy to identify with what he must be feeling. And it is understandable why afterwards he has second thoughts about coming back. But this is saved by him delivering a baby at the end. which reminds him of why he wants to be in ER. Because it is not just about death but also about life, new life and saved one.
