Warning: Spoilers
The Son of Captain Blood (1962) marked the official movie debut of Sean Flynn (son of Errol Flynn). Despite the fact that Errol was a top box office draw, that was most definitely not the case with Sean. Even though movie advertisements were angled to cash in the relationship, audiences didn't care. Bad reviews didn't help either. The direction of this bomb was in the hands of a gent named Tullio Demichelli, an Argentinian who had a reasonably extensive career in Spanish- language cinema. Helping him out on the action chores here was none other than Yakima Canutt. But even with Yak's input, the action scenes are still dull and one is always painfully aware that young Sean has neither the dash nor the charisma of his dad. Even at his best, this Flynn is only a pasteboard replica. Admittedly, Casey Robinson's script has little to recommend it as it plods through the customary plot and character clichés. Co-star, Ann Todd, is wasted in a nothing role. Only the accomplished Technicolor photography in the hands of Alesandro Ulloa deserves much in the way of praise. All in all, this movie was a waste of 95 minutes in the version I saw, although there is also an 88 minutes cut floating around.
