The Roommate (I) (2011)
7/10
A thriller with depth and value...
17 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The movie "The Roommate" turned out to be somewhat more than what I had expected it to be.

The cover/poster for the movie looks interesting. Having Rebecca in the middle (and in focus) and a crowd of blurred out people passing around her. Sort of have a chaotic feeling to it.

"The Roommate" tells the story of Sara who is in college and gets to live with Rebecca, her new roommate. But there is something not entirely right about Rebecca.

The story starts off nice and quietly, and quickly picks up pace, and it never leaves you hanging. There is always something waiting just around the corner, and the movie feeds you bits and fragments to always keep you wanting to see what is around the next corner. The way the movie was built up worked so well.

As for the characters in the movie, well, they had lots of depth and personality. There was a lot of nice touches and details to the characters, and you felt like they were actual persons that you could relate to (on one level or another). Many movies just have superficial characters, but the ones in "The Roommate" are portrayed nicely and are well fleshed out. The two main characters are Sara (played by Minka Kelly) and Rebecca (played by Leighton Meester). They both did a really good job with their characters, but Leighton was the one who was the most memorable. She really did an amazing job in putting the deranged Rebecca to life on the screen. Now, I am not a huge fan of Billy Zane, but in his role as Profressor Roberts in this movie, he was actually quite good.

Now, this is not a movie that will have you gasping or cringing in fear, but it uses enough subtle psychological factors to have you somewhat in suspense.

There was, in my opinion, just one drawback in the movie, and it was the continuity error at the ending. Where Rebecca falls to the floor, a lock of hair covers her eyes, but in a subsequent shot, the hair is oddly enough brushed away. Have a look, and you will know what I mean. That was a really stupid mistake to have in a movie that was otherwise so great.

If you liked movies such as "May" and/or "She's Crushed", then you will definitely want to check out "The Roommate" because it is right up there with those, same kind of semi-twisted thriller that just goes to prove you that everyone is not what you may think they are.

I like movies that are a bit out of the norm from the mainstream movies, and "The Roommate" turned out to be just a bit more than most other movies. And for that, a big thumbs up.
