Review of The Wallet

Seinfeld: The Wallet (1992)

The fourth season of Seinfeld continues its glorious streak with the third consecutive two-parter, this time focused on another constant source of amusement: Jerry's parents, Helen and Morty.

The two come to New York to see a back specialist for Morty, but things get ugly after the older Seinfeld is left thinking his wallet was stolen in the doctor's office. Additionally, the parents find out about Jerry's feud with "Crazy" Joe Davola and wonder why he isn't wearing the watch they gave them. As for the others, Elaine comes back from a trip to Europe (a plot device used to explain the actress's absence in the previous episodes) with a plan to break up with her psychiatrist boyfriend (Stephen McHattie), while George's greed puts the NBC pilot deal in serious jeopardy.

The Wallet is a classic Seinfeld episode in that it draws comedy from very mundane situations, though viewed through a more surreal prism, whilst continuing the ongoing meta-television arc. Highlights include all the scenes featuring Morty, who really gets to dominate the episode with his stupidity, and McHattie's fun guest appearance, which sets up part of the next episode's storyline. Plus, you can't really beat the self-reflective genius of Jerry complaining about TV's "To be continued" habit and explaining how it doesn't fit comedy - in the closing minutes of a "Part 1" episode.
