Hawaii Five-O: Dear Enemy (1971)
Season 3, Episode 21

Why?!

This was an interesting episode but unfortunately the reason for why the crime occurred sure seemed vague. As a result, it's not one of the better episodes of season three.

The show begins with a guy arriving back in Hawaii after having been in Australia for a year. This loudmouth guy talked and talked about some "big deal" that would happen that night. However, the "big deal" turned out to be his being murdered instead of getting the money someone promised him. But because the murderer was so clever, it appeared that the guy died by accident.

Why Five-O got involved in this seemingly mundane death is that the wife (Vera Miles) of a man imprisoned said she was supposed to meet with the dead man AND he had information that could have gotten the conviction overturned. However, the lady is VERY unreliable and rather flaky, so McGarrett is dubious about reopening this old case. However, eventually the real murderer is revealed--but his exact motivations and actions really never made any sense.

Overall, the show didn't have a great payoff but kept my interest. However, the most interesting thing to me was to see how incredibly beautiful Ms. Miles was in 1971--she seemed even prettier than she was in the early 60s when she starred in "Psycho".
