Review of Brick

Brick (2005)
10/10
Brick truly captures
6 February 2009
I saw Brick shortly after its release at Sundance and again this weekend and I was immediately captured by the witty dialog, gritty style and the great performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and that of his supporting cast, especially Nora Zehetner as Laura. I must say that this is one of my favorite films of all time.

The plot revolves around Brendan, a troubled and desolate boy, who is contacted by his addicted ex-girlfriend and asked for help. This is the beginning of journey into the drug addict subculture of suburbia and a quest for revenge and clarity about what happened to his ex.

I found this film a refreshing take on the detective genre, with a fresh dialog reminiscent of noir. It also depicts desolation, loss and addiction in a way that feels genuine. The main character is one of the best anti-heroes of all time. He is flawed and somewhat broken, but somehow incredibly strong. The interpretation of this role by Joseph Gordon-Levitt shows, along with his role in Mysterious Skin that he is one of the best young actors around.
