Chaplin's Third Film And His First With Mabel
9 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Chaplin's third film is another film of historical importance. It is his first collaboration with Mabel Normand. Mabel Normand, of course, was the first female superstar of her day. She had the good fortune of working with Chaplin early in her career, but this film is nothing special. Chaplin again plays a heel in his third straight film who is after poor Mabel in her pajamas, which must have been quite shocking in its day. Chaplin has little more than a supporting role in this film, as Mabel Normand was a star at 19 years old already. Chances are it was Normand's beauty which paved her way in the business and not her talent, as most of her films are little known today. That might also have to do with her being tied to the William Desmond Taylor scandal also. * of 4 stars.
