Things That Go Bump (1997 TV Movie)

Heh! I thought I was the only one who remembered this pilot.

Warning: Spoilers
With the turn of the millennium still three years in the future, back then, NBC tried to jump on the sf/fantasy bandwagon revolutionized by X-FILES and BTVS. Of course, remembering how they treated DARK SKIES and the original STAR TREK, it's no surprise that they didn't develop this cute concept, any further. What cute concept? A small elite unit of the New Orleans Police Department created exclusively for ghostbusting!

"Bump" Bumpstead was the stalwart hero, whose nickname was not so much an abbreviation as an indicator of his agility (or unpredictable lack thereof). Chloe Garrett was his girl-Friday (not to mention, the police chief's daughter). And, I believe it was an Asian-American actor--not credited here, for some reason--who was recruited to design their ghostbusting equipment.

For an unbought pilot, this was pretty good. Scary, yet funny; just like the original "Ghostbusters" movie. Moreover, New Orleans has plenty of genuine occult lore as part of its heritage. So, NBC wouldn't have had to do as much inventing as Joss Whedon Productions.

Then, again; what else can you expect from a network that provided such a disappointing series finale' to an otherwise flawless masterpiece like QUANTUM LEAP?
