Review of Count Duckula

Count Duckula (1988–1993)
9/10
For me best cartoon ever!!

Count Duckula, main "hero" of animated series by British studio Cosgrove Hall, is the world's only vegetarian vampire (duck), who lives at his castle Duckula in Transylvania. Because of mistake in re-incarnation ritual (using of ketchup instead of bat wing blood) he is not a villain, he hates blood, loves vegetables and his biggest wish is to became famous. He has a butler called Igor who's biggest wish is to have his master in old evil blood-sucking ways, and housewife Nanny, big hen, who has little brain but wide heart, go through the wall when entering some room and endlessly loves his "Duckypoos". Often there is doctor Von Goosewing, left vampire hunter, whose only wish is to kill Duckula. There are two mot bats Sviatoslav and Dimitri, who comment current events in each episode. And of course there is narrator, who at the beginning and at the end of each episode tries – with lightly ironical tone – to make an effect that we are watching a true horror.

Man, it cannot be explained how I LOVED (and still love) this show! Maybe it is/was because of some kind of my little fascination by vampires. Here at Czech republic it was only twice on TV and only first 6 (!!!) eps was aired. When I heard at the end of sixth episode that this one is the last, I thought that the world just came to end – I was really unhappy. Count Duckula very well mixed various styles of humor – English, based on animated gags and "darkgray". "Heros" of the series aren't strictly separated to good and bad, which makes the series less typical. I think Duckula can be very well viewed by "older kids" and adults too ("Town hall terrors" is good example). I maybe would not recommend it to children under six (for example episode 3 "one stormy night" could be little horrific for them). Voices of all characters are simply great and so is the opening and ending theme song. And I haven't seen more amusing (ending) captions than this ones.

For me this is the best cartoon ever. There is also one (and I hope not the last) DVD with first six episodes, so question "buy it or no" has only one possible answer – YES! And now there are good news! Read this: http://80scartoons.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=321 It seems that we will have American DVD edition of first series this year!!
