Baseball's Brian's Song
21 December 2004
Okay, lets concede that this movie is the Baseball version of Brian's Song. It still has the compelling idea that friendship is the basis of true sportsmanship.

A slowly dying, so-so catcher on the team is protected by the ace pitcher and able to fulfill his dream of playing in the big leagues. At times a comedy and at others a personal tragedy, Robert DiNero turns in an excellent performance as the catcher. Yet this movie is probably the last one in which DiNero got second billing.

Michael Moriarty turns in the performance of a lifetime (a shame it came so early in his movie career)as the scheming pitcher who turns from the focus on baseball to a focus on humanity. Truly outstanding.

And to tell the truth, it doesn't hurt that The Streets of Laredo is one of my all time favorite Cowboy songs.

"So bang the drums slowly and play the pipes lowly for I am a young cowboy and I know I must die"
