Anatomy Class (2000)

A strong stomach is required

This black offering mixes horror and comedy and seems to indicate that there is a decreasing value in the sanctity of human life as it gives way to the furtherance of medical knowledge. The dialogue is delivered in a matter of fact way as cold as the steel scalpels used to dissect the three cadavers. You may feel ill at ease (as I did) when the blood drips freely on to the cold floor tiles and has to be mopped up.

It's rather strange that all the medical students are women. They are quick and eager to examine the genital area of the three soldiers. The poised scalpels will send shivers down the spine of any normal male! There is much laughter in the class as the students assess each specimen of manhood and there appears to be unanimity in the claim that size really does matter, at least in this particular anatomy class.

The unfortunate loss of one of the cadavers (the one mostly admired and which won a standing ovation) begets even more horror when a vote is taken as to which student should be selected as the replacement.

I found the film rather unsettling (which means the atmosphere must have been right) but give it high marks chiefly for its originality. Once seen this film is not easily forgotten - a scary 12 minutes!
